High-flying king mackerel in the Florida Keys

High-flying king mackerel in the Florida Keys

I was born and raised on the east coast of Central Florida at Cocoa Beach, better known as the Space Coast.

My parents owned a tackle shop and instilled a love of the art of angling in me at an early age. After getting a job as an outdoor news assistant to Bill Sargent at Florida Today Newspaper, I decided to make a career of it. Unlike most other outdoor writers, though, it was more important to me to be better on the water than I was behind a keyboard. So, after graduating from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, I moved to Key West to pursue a full-time career as a light tackle fishing guide.

In 2003, I left the Keys to take a position as managing editor of Sport Fishing Magazine. Shortly thereafter, I was promoted to editor of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters. After three years there, I moved over as editor of Salt Water Sportsman — the world’s largest saltwater fishing magazine and the second largest boating magazine.

After the economic downturn, my position was downsized and duties assumed by other staff members. Figuring that life is too short to expire under flourescent lighting, I decided to return to the fish-rich waters of the Florida Keys and take it as an opportunity to reinvent my media skills and get back into guiding.
